Wilson Memorial High School Reviews

This school has other students that don't care about learning all they care about is hanging with friends! I was so happy when my parents said that we were moving!

I had the privilege of serving on a visiting team at WMHS and found the school, students, teachers, and administration to be very professional and dedicated to learning. The dedication to teaching students life skills that will mold them into young adults is commended in a time that rules are often overlooked.

The after school tutoring program is a great way for all of the students to stay and receive extra skills or ask questions. Please continue this program.

I believe that Wilson Memorial High School is comparable to all the other local schools in many way. However, in my experience they do have far more strict rules about miscellaneous topics, such as appearance, absences (including excused ones).

I would have to agree with the May 04 review. I have had 2 children at WMHS and I think the principal of the school is on a power trip. I don't think he takes best interest of the children into consideration. I think he uses the children for his own best interest. The teachers at WMHS are great they really love the children and love teaching and it shows. The sports program leaves much to be desired. There is not alot of parent involvement probably due to the principals dislike of many of the students and parents. He is condescending and arrogant. The administration leaves a whole lot to be desired. Wilson also needs to expand their art and music programs. There has to be a solution to Wilson's problems.

We were transferred to NJ in '04 where my son attended school for 3 months before we were transferred again to VA. Although I am overall satisfied with Wilson, it pales in comparison to the NJ school where a larger variety of foreign languages, sports, extracurricular activities were offered. Their attention to new students was phenomenal, meeting with them on a monthly basis to see how they were doing, pairing them with 'established' students. I have been disappointed with the math tutoring at Wilson, where the kids snack, & essentially just do their homework. Also, my son's first introduction to Shakespeare has been rushed. They've watched movies on Romeo & Juliet with no real discussion of the symbolism or language meaning. They also had no review in this class for their SOL exam, unlike every other class. Poor organization & time management by this teacher, obviously.

I think that wilson needs to be bigger and there needs to be more after school activities for students to get involed so that they can stay out of trouble and they need to have less rules about the way that the students dress because the way students dress doesnt distract them from learning and paying attention in class it makes them more comfortable with themselves.

My second and last child will graduate from Wilson this Friday. I feel that they have both received an excellent education, with teachers and administrators that care. They are all accessable and very interested in the well being and future of our children.

Overall, I feel this is a good school; however, I feel that the principal has gotten so caught up in climbing the administrative ladder that he no longer looks out for the student's best interest. He was a much better principal at the elementary level. It appears that he and the school board work hand in hand to protect their image and not support the students.
